Raise your hand if your thought the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense would hold the Kansas City Chiefs offense to nine points in the Super Bowl.
No one could have predicted this kind of performance from the Bucs defense. This was indeed a case of saving the best for last. The Bucs best performance by the defense this season, and they saved it for the biggest stage, as the Buccaneers beat the Chiefs 31-9 to win Super Bowl 55.
My key to the game was the Bucs defensive line vs. the Chiefs offensive line. With Vita Vea back in the lineup, the Bucs front seven generated consisted pressure on the opposing quarterback.
This defensive front seven had Patrick Mahomes on the run most of the night and was the essential factor in shutting down the Chiefs high powered offense.
This was the most pressure that Mahomes has been under in one game in his short NFL career.
The defense sacked Mahomes three times, and he was hit ten times as the Bucs defense had their way with the Chiefs offensive line.
The Bucs offense only rang up 340 total yards of offense but took advantage of everything the Chiefs defense gave them.
The Bucs offense did not have any turnovers, while the Tampa Bay defense intercepted Patrick Mahomes twice.
The Brady to Gronkowski connection was dialed in as Gronk had his best game as Buccaneer with six catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
Another key to the Bucs winning the game was Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones’s run game. You could see in the second half, the Bucs running game wore down the Chiefs defense as they were able to get big chunks of yardage as the Bucs finished with 145 yards rushing.
With the win, the Bucs win their second Super Bowl in franchise history and set numerous Super Bowl records in the process.
-Bruce Arians is now the oldest coach in NFL history to win the Super Bowl at 68 years and 127 days.
-The Bucs are the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium and also the first team to win the Super Bowl in their home stadium.
—Bucs female coaches Lori Locust and Marla Javadifar become the first two female coaches in NFL history to win a Super Bowl.
-Tom Brady becomes the oldest quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl at 43.
-Tom Brady has played in ten Super Bowls and won seven of those. That is more wins than any other NFL franchise.
-Tom Brady has five Super Bowl MVP awards. Joe Montana had three in his career.
The other thing that was so shocking to see was the Bucs coaching staff out coaching Andy Reid and the Chiefs staff.
There were the questionable use of timeouts, lack of halftime adjustments, and some questionable play-calling.
It was a great ending to a roller-coaster season. The Bucs were sitting at 7-5 at the end of November and finished the season 8-0, culminating with a Super Bowl win.
The Bucs have a lot of work to do before March 17th, the start of the free agency period. The Bucs have 27 unrestricted free agents, and it will take some excellent cap work by Jason Licht and the front office to keep the critical pieces of this team together.
Tom Brady will be back next year along with coach Bruce Arians as the Buccaneers will try to get back to back Super Bowl wins.
Vegas has the Kansas City Chiefs as the favorites to win the Super Bowl next season, followed by the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
