The Tampa Bay Lightning are starting to find their way after winning their third straight game Thursday Night, a 4-1 win over Calgary.
Although the Lightning were outshot 40-24, the Bolts played great defensive hockey down the stretch and beat the Flames To get their tenth win of the season.
Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist, Nikita Kucherov had two goals, and Mikhail Sergachev pitched in with two assists to help the Bolts win the game.
The game’s pivotal moment occurred in the third period, with the Lightning up 2-0 and Calgary on the power play.
The Lightning had a 2-0 lead, and the Flames went on the power play. Elias Lindholm scored a PP goal to cut the lead to 2-1 and give the Flames some momentum.
But the Lightning were able to strike back quickly as Phillipe Myers scored his first goal of the season ten seconds after the Lindholm goal to give the Lightning a 3-1 lead and take the momentum back from Calgary.
Andrei Vasileviskiy was outstanding in goal, stopping 39 Calgary shots and not allowing many rebounds, eliminating second chances for the Flames.
After the Myers goal, the Lightning controlled play for the rest of the game and had a 16-6 advantage on faceoffs in the third period.
The Lightning has allowed many goals this season due to playing too loose in their end. However, that was not the case on Thursday, as the Lightning came up with one of their best defensive efforts this young season.
Jon Cooper talked about the Calgary shot advantage and liked his team’s chances even though the Bolts had just 24 shots on goal. “I’ll take the chances we had over the ones they had. They had shot volume, and they were getting pucks to the net, but your goalie’s seeing them, and they were from the outside. It’s just limiting what happens after that. I thought we did a good job of that.”
The Lightning may have lost another defenseman as Nick Perbix left the ice in the second period after blocking a shot. Perbix did not return to the ice for the rest of the game.
Perbix has played well the last few weeks and has added some offense to his game. Perbix has three goals and three assists on the season.
The Lightning is now 10-6-1 on the season and has won three in a row.
The Bolts will head north for a matchup with the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. This will be the first matchup against former teammate Ryan McDonagh who was traded to the Predators this off-season in a salary cap move.
The puck drops at 7 PM in Nashville on Saturday.
