It was nice knowing ya.
The Tampa Bay Rays made quick work of the Toronto Blue Jays, sweeping the Blue Jays to move on to the divisional round in San Diego.
Behind the pitching of Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, the Rays stymied the Blue Jays offense in a pair of wins 3-1, and 8-2.
In the Rays 8-2 win on Wednesday afternoon, the team had one of their better offensive showings of the last month as they had 12 hits against six Toronto pitchers.
The Rays offense exploded for seven runs in the second inning. Hunter Renfroe who has a rough season hit a grand a slam to give the rays a 7-0 lead.
Mike Zunino homered as well driving in two runs and collecting a couple of hits.
The Rays seem to buy into the philosophy that winning is most important. It doesn’t matter who gets the credit.
As Mike Zunino said after the game, this team cares for one another and that is a key.
It’s not like anything I’ve ever been a part of. It’s the most complete team from 1 to 28, I’ll go on to say from 1 to 60. Everyone cares for one another, and I think that goes a long way as teammates, as people. That’s what Kevin Cash preaches right away when we get to camp. Be a good teammate.
“Guys buy into that, and when you can trust the guy to your left and right, it makes it easy to go to play every day.”
Kevin Cash echoed that in his post-game comments.
“What we do have and what makes them formidable is the entire roster is used to help us win games We do that consistently during the season and we’re going to do it during the postseason. In comparison to other clubs, everybody gets there in a different way. Our way is what we think, with the shape of our roster, is most beneficial to winning games.
“And credit (players) for their buy-in for that approach and understanding.”
The Rays are off until Monday when the Division series begins in San Diego.
Major League is following the NHL and the NBA playoff scenario and creating bubble cities for the remainder of the playoffs.
The ALDS will be played in San Diego and Los Angeles, with San Diego hosting ALCS.
Houston and Arlington Texas will host the NLDS. The NLCS will be played at Globe Life Park in Arlington Texas.
Globe Life Park will also host the 2020 World Series.
The Rays will play the New York Yankees in the division series. The Rays went 8-2 against the Yankees during the regular season. Game one will be Monday in San Diego.
The Rays will be able to throw Snell, Glasnow, and Morton in the first three games of that series. Those three starters are as good as any in baseball in a short series.
It will take eleven more wins by the Rays to bring a World Championship to Tampa.
That journey starts Monday in San Diego.
