Bucs fans have been beat and kicked around for so long that the news seemed almost unbelievable.
When the rumors first stated circulating that Tom Brady the GOAT and six time Super Bowl winner was interested in coming to Tampa, it seemed to good to be true.
But as the news slowly became a reality today, Bucs fans realized that this was no false rumor and reality began to set in that Tom Brady would be the starting quarterback for the Buccaneers in 2020.
Although the contract has not been signed, details are that Brady will sign a two year contract that will pay him 30 million dollars a year.
Brady will be 43 when the 2020 season begins and this signing suddenly has the network talking heads shining the spotlight on Tampa and making the Bucs relevant again in NFL circles.
One stat that stands out with Tom Brady is that he has thrown 29 interceptions the last four years. That is an average of just over seven picks a year.
Compare that to Winston’s 30 interceptions during the 2019 season. So it’s not hard to see why the Bucs moved on from Winston. Turnovers cause you to lose games and that is what happened with the Bucs last season as Winston cost the Bucs at least two wins against Houston and Atlanta.
With the Brady signing, the Bucs are bringing in a guy who knows how to win and can help this young Buccaneer team develop a winners mentality and get them over that mental hurdle.
Brady will also have one of the best receiving corps in the league in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and tight end OJ Howard.
Evans and Godwin are already better than any receiver Brady worked with in New England outside of HOFer Randy Moss.
With Brady as the starter for the 2020 season, the Bucs have to be thinking of the future in the upcoming draft and draft a quarterback.
Although Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert will probably be gone by the 14th selection, the Bucs should be able to get one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft.
Washington quarterback Jacob Eason, Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, and Utah State quarterback Jordan Love should all be available at number 14.
The best case scenario is that Brady will only be the starter for two years at best and then the Bucs will need to have someone ready to step in when Brady retires.
Brady has always viewed the up and coming quarterbacks as a threat and has kind of distanced himself from the mentors role.
Just look at the Jimmy Garoppolo situation and how that ended up.
Brady is now at the point in his career where he should view no one as a threat. He is pretty much guaranteed to be the starter for two years and would be a great teacher for a young quarterback and have him ready to take over as the starter in 2022.
Let’s hope the Bucs can shore up the offensive line and keep Brady upright and healthy throughout the season.
Once news broke of the Brady signing, there was a waiting list of over 7,000 to inquire about getting Bucs season tickets.
One thing you can get on, the Bucs will play to a full house every home game this season.
No word yet on if Chris Godwin will give up his number 12 for Tom Brady.
